The Pelvic Floor & Your Nervous System
The nervous system plays a crucial role with pelvic health. All the muscles in the body are innervated by nerves, including your pelvic floor and even external genitalia. These nerves can become overstimulated for various reasons:
- Vaginal infections like yeast or bacterial
- Hypertonic muscles
- Trauma – IE: childbirth
…and there’s many more.
Even when the muscles heal or the infection is successfully treated, sometimes the nerves are still in a state of overstimulation. So to address this, we have to go to the source, the autonomic nervous system.
We know there’s two parts to the autonomic nervous system: sympathetic = fight or flight and parasympathetic = rest, digest & heal. To down-regulate the overstimulated nerves in our body we need to stimulate the parasympathetic side of things.
Which is exactly what we did in today’s yoga class!
You'll need: 2 blocks, tennis ball and a blanket with some structure to it, like the yoga saddle blanket or even a big beach towel.
